This might not be the place where suggestions are made (let me know).
Would you be interested in making a video on how to approach backing-up a singer: I really like what Barney Kessel did with Julie London, Barry Galbraith with Dinah Washington, Joe Pass with Ella Fitzgerald. What to play that does not get in the way of the singer. Any knowledge specific to that role, I would find useful.
Best,
Jerome

Great idea Jerome!.. thanks for posting!
I’m currently working on a Barney Kessel video… specifically covering his playing with Julie London funnily enough, so hopefully that’ll get things started in that regard.
I also plan to do a video lesson on Joe Pass’s accompaniment of Stormy Weather live with Ella from the Hannover show.
If you haven’t had a go at it yet, do check out my “Misty - classy chords” video… the intention with that was as an accompaniment to a singer and I throw a fair few Kessel and Pass tricks in there too along the way…

Great idea.
I would also suggest a lesson, or an AMA discussion, about how to structure practice sessions with the instrument.

I’m with you Zohar, I’m a relative beginner, and there is just so much to ‘internalize’… while also playing and making music, which is why we’re all here.

Good thinking guys, I’ll work on putting a “practice routine” video together very soon

Super. The idea of a practice routine lesson is a good one.
Some other suggestions:
- “Big Boy” the Bill Jennings solo vs the Billy Butler solo. Why are they different?
-Bill Jennings: anything from “Architect of Soul Jazz” 633-Knock is great…but so is his Mood Indigo
-Billy Butler - Twang Thang or anything from “Legends of Acid Jazz” comp
-“Playing Solo vs Playing in a Combo”
-“How to Work with Backing Tracks”
-“Rhythm Changes, Standards, and What Should be Your Repetoire”
-“Cat Litter: an Original Song by Alex”
-“What are Arpeggios vs Chords vs Scales?” Are they the same things with different names?
-“How to Play Piano Music on Guitar: Ray Charles on Six Strings”
I found the jazz chord survival guide enormously useful.

Brilliant list of ideas Lindsay, thank you! Haha I love the “Cat Litter” one especially!
I’m planning to film a “Big Boy” lesson over the next couple of weeks for sure, and will go into some depth re; the different takes and the confusion surrounding that stuff!
“Rhythm Changes” lesson very much on the horizon also.
Thanks again buddy, I have noted all of your ideas
Hi Lindsay,
I liked your comment about the differences between Bill Jennings and Billy Butler’s version of Big Boy.
I have been coincidentally working on both versions and had some thoughts. This is just my opinion. I think the Jennings version is much more interesting and fun. It has more well defined and identifiable riffs that are classic. I do think the Butler version starts to exceed Jennings at the end when he does the ascending major chord shape thing going from A flat on up. I’m not sure I’m explaining this well, but Just after that ascending thing Butler does more interesting strumming a phrasing of the basic chords. Jennings just kind of plainly strums them on the beat.
Junior Watson’s version runs with that strumming pattern but I think he bases most of his cover on Jennings.
I’m bored at work and thought this was a cool comment so I thought I’d jump in. I’ve thought a lot about this song over the years.
