JImmie River and the Cherokee’s live performance of Rose Room is so cool. This entire album is just amazing - when Western Swing guys could play the sam estuff as the jazz guys. It’s a basically Charlie Christian with pedal steel. Rivers quotes the entire Charlie Cristian solo in there too.
Mary Orborne’s version is outstanding too and very similar in style.
There are a million other cool versions out there but these are the twoI know in the Charlie Christian style. I think there was probably 20 years between CC in 1939 and these other from I beelive the late 50s and early 60s.
Great stuff. My favorite guitarist of late is Jonathan Stout. He plays in the style of Allan Reuss on an old acoustic with a ribbon mic. Here’s his version: https://youtu.be/8-CBvEq7IYM
Enjoy!
Stout is great! Is he possibly the best swing guitar player around today? i bet he’s the best (authentic) old school swing big band leaders around.
I just learned a fun fact recently. Stout is a lawyer. He decided to drop full time lawyering to play music full time. i didn’t know this was possible, but he supplements his musical income by picking up work for mother lawyers who might go on vacation or just can’t do something on any given day. I didn’t know you could have substitute lawyers. Being a lawyer is his side gig. That’s backwards and pretty cool.
I read another story recently.About a pilot for one of the big airlines. He’s also an orchestra conductor and a very well known one. The airline gives them time off whenever he has a gig which i think he has around the world.
