Interactive Listening Journal: What are you listening to right now?

Hi guys,

If Alex has his “album of the week”, I say that we should have ours too!

I’ll start with something that if you don’t know, I think you should: Dean Hightower.

Dean Hightower is actually George Barnes doing surf music, at the request of his record company (to my understanding).

Another weekly listen for me is some hypnotic-monotones-yet-melodic-post-rock-instrumental -kinda-thing: Brokeback.

I love this thread! I’ll add some stuff soon. Brokeback is a band that does not get nearly the credit it should have. Looks at the Bird is a damn near perfect album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4ynCZMZ7h8&list=OLAK5uy_mle5RtoIrkzPswoUCAnuCw-ZfflmD7qC4

What’s been on rotation at my place lately:

  • Duke Levine - Left To My Own Devices and Beneath the Blue - played both while I made dinner this evening, and I thought “We need to get Alex to give us a lesson on Duke’s track Caravan off BtB while he’s going deep on pedal steel stuff”
  • KNOWER - Knower Forever - Absolutely sick drums and bass all over this record
  • Yussef Dayes - Black Classical Music
  • Finally, my oldest daughter is home from college for the holidays, and she’s been going down the rabbit hole of shoegaze and shoegaze-adjacent stuff over the past year, so a fair amount of Ride, mbv, Slowdive, etc.

Not very guitar centric, but this week I’ve been listening to Astor Piazzolas music.

Such a talented artist, so much narrative and s p a c e in his compositions.

check this tune out for example: https://youtu.be/c7Fgh0b-2_g?si=xkwBgMyG8kuUZxhv

or this playlist for a longer immersion Spotify

I’m a big fan of Astor Piazzola’s music, some of which has been beautifully arranged for solo or duo guitar. Here’s a live recording of Milonga del Angel that entranced me for years. https://youtu.be/GWX-J3tgIlY I tried to learn how to play it on classical guitar, but ended up with a tendinitis of the thumb. Great version of Adios Nonino here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5QxJ1HIJ90
Check out also the Assad Brothers (Sergio and Odair), who arranged and played many of his pieces.

So am I (a big fan). There’s loads of great Argentinian guitar music out there in styles: (Milonga, Tango, Zamba, Chacarera).

I notice this week that Alex uploaded the Girl from Ipanema. Here’s is an album that my parents played a lot when I was young. The guitarist: Laurindo Almeida, was among a few notable ones (Luiz Bonfa, Joao Gilberto) who did albums with Stan Getz in the early 1960s. Here is the album I like.

Thanks for posting Wayne, I’m not familiar with that record so will certainly check it out this weekend. I appreciate the recommendation my friend :pray:t2:

Just got turned on to this gem of a tune. Those first chords are absolute magic. The major swing section is pretty damn sweet too. Alex any chance you might do a transcription of this one…?

Here’s where I heard about this one. Retrofret has his guitar for sale (it’s over $150,000). Gorgeous guitar. Great sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=uiMXtUVHboA&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fretrofret.com%2F&feature=emb_imp_woyt

This is really beautiful! Thanks for sharing! The first and last part are mesmerizing!

These guys are in heavy rotation with me the past few weeks. I was fortunate enough to see Twanguero Diego Garcia and Paul Pigat play together recently, mind blowing. Two fantastic players that deserve more recognition.

Those are two of my favorites as well! That’s tommy Harkerider in the Pigat video as well. He’s a master. Great tutorials.

I am lucky to live in the same town as Paul and get to see him a lot. Tommy smokes too!

Are you in Canada then? Is that where Pigat lives?
