Duke Levine - Left To My Own Devices and Beneath the Blue - played both while I made dinner this evening, and I thought “We need to get Alex to give us a lesson on Duke’s track Caravan off BtB while he’s going deep on pedal steel stuff”
KNOWER - Knower Forever - Absolutely sick drums and bass all over this record
Finally, my oldest daughter is home from college for the holidays, and she’s been going down the rabbit hole of shoegaze and shoegaze-adjacent stuff over the past year, so a fair amount of Ride, mbv, Slowdive, etc.

I’m a big fan of Astor Piazzola’s music, some of which has been beautifully arranged for solo or duo guitar. Here’s a live recording of Milonga del Angel that entranced me for years. https://youtu.be/GWX-J3tgIlY I tried to learn how to play it on classical guitar, but ended up with a tendinitis of the thumb. Great version of Adios Nonino here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5QxJ1HIJ90
Check out also the Assad Brothers (Sergio and Odair), who arranged and played many of his pieces.
So am I (a big fan). There’s loads of great Argentinian guitar music out there in styles: (Milonga, Tango, Zamba, Chacarera).
I notice this week that Alex uploaded the Girl from Ipanema. Here’s is an album that my parents played a lot when I was young. The guitarist: Laurindo Almeida, was among a few notable ones (Luiz Bonfa, Joao Gilberto) who did albums with Stan Getz in the early 1960s. Here is the album I like.
Just got turned on to this gem of a tune. Those first chords are absolute magic. The major swing section is pretty damn sweet too. Alex any chance you might do a transcription of this one…?
These guys are in heavy rotation with me the past few weeks. I was fortunate enough to see Twanguero Diego Garcia and Paul Pigat play together recently, mind blowing. Two fantastic players that deserve more recognition.
