Fair’s fair, Gert, you’re putting yourself out there, so here’s my attempt at People Get Ready. I’ve only just started learning the lead part so that’s where the clip ends. It’s only a short bit so I extended it by noodling a bit and then just playing it again, haha. I’ll post again when I’ve got this smoother and learned some more lead bits. I wanted to magically produce the plectrum for the lead bit but it got in the way of the fingerpicking so I had to grab it off the table. That’s something else I’ll work on - I’m not used to using a pick at all so I quite like the idea of hybrid picking. I’m kind of doing that with Nuages, but it’s not quite there yet.
So for now, a fragment of People Get Ready. Any tips and feedback are more than welcome!
Right on Steve! Really good, I enjoyed that. Sounds good to me, not much to add, just keep at it for the lead part.
You know, I actually really like lead parts played with the fingers, so unless you are keen on learning to use a plectrum, I’d say try learning the lead parts with your fingers. Ok, it sounds different and maybe less punchy, but it can add so much character en smoothness that I think it’s worth the try, (Look at someone like Knopfler) you might surprise yourself. I’ve been trying it myself as well, and I must say I dig it. I also try to combine fingers and pick, be it hybrid or tucking away your plectrum between the fingers when playing fingerstyle parts, really fun when you get the hang of it. But it’s all good, go with what speaks to you the most, and put some effort into it
And thanks for joining me on our effort to get more people sharing, hopefully more to follow!
Thanks Gert, that’s exactly the kind of feedback I can use. Much appreciated. I sometimes use a thumb pick so I might give that a go as well at some point. You’re exactly right - I’m trying to use the plectrum to get a bit more punchiness but up to now I’ve always played fingerstyle. I’ll upload a short completely fingerstyle version soon. I agree it’ll be great if more of us share - I think that’ll be really valuable for us all!
No time like the present, here’s the fingerstyle version. I snatched at the lead first time round so I just went round again. There are still some timing issues that I need to work on though - if you or anyone else has any notes on the timing, technique etc I’ll be pleased to hear them
Beautifully done Steve, it’s so good to see people doing so much justice to these lessons! The pick/hybrid thing will improve the more you do it, no need to worry about it, just keep plugging away and it’ll feel natural sooner than you think.
Thanks for sharing the video with us mate
Thanks Alex, appreciated! And thank you for the great lessons.
Yeah man, didn’t miss the plectrum at all!
Haha, thanks. Let’s see how far I get with it
Nice one Steve, absolutely agreed with Gert’s comments re. the plectrum. The fact that you’re more comfortable shines through in the playing. Stellar rendition well done
Gideon
Thanks! I really appreciate the feedback and encouragement here!
