Really been enjoying going back and listening to Will Bernard, an amazing NY based guitarist who has played with Tom Waits, Stanton Moore and Robert Walter. He has a pretty solid solo catalogue with some stellar soul jazz funk stuff.

Since he came up this week. I’ve been working my way through this solo. It is one of my favorites. There is so much good material and a lot of it is purely Junior Watson and his quirks.
This album I believe is out of print but can be found in its entirety on Youtube. I think it’s the last truly unique and classic blues album with Watson being the last bluesman (at least in this vintage blues scene) to advance this art with his one of a kind playing. I’m sure that’s up for debate or argument but I think he changed the way this music is played more than anybody in recent years.

Been listening to this album after forgetting about it for a while. Hank Crawford is a fantastic arranger and all his jazz records have an r’n’b, bluesy, funk vibe. Most feature cool guitar guys including Cornell Dupree, Eric Gale and on this one some tasty blues and funk styles from Calvin Newborn. Prolific use of octaves and just so cool tone. Calvin didn’t record much despite a long career as sideman often in his piano playing brother Phineas’ band, which is a real shame. This record always sends me on to listen to Joni’s version of Centrepiece on “Hissing……” with Robben Ford, and then to Alex Chilton’s swinging attack at Framework for the Blues on his acoustic Cliches album, now reissued in altered form as a compilation. Both playing around Memphis in the 70s always makes me think Calvin’s version with Hank was the main inspiration for Alex’s.
